Singer and actor Zac Efron was nominated and won the Teen Choice Award for Breakout Star for starring in High School Musical in 2006. In 2007, he once again took the role of Troy Bolton in the sequel High School Musical 2 and the movie was a huge success with roughly 17.5 million viewers. After his breakthrough with High School Musical and its sequel, Efron departed from musicals and took part in a big-screen remake of Hair Spray. Along with John Travolta and Christopher Walken, he helped the film earn $199 million. Even though he made a departure from musicals, he honored his fans by taking on the role of Troy Bolton the last time in High School Musical 3: Senior year – the last installment of the trilogy. Since then, he shed his Disney image by taking the lead role in many mature movies such as The Lucky One, 17 Again and The Paperboy. Efron is famous for switching between many movie categories within a short period of time. He started as the “singing and dancing guy” then switched to forgettable comedies. After goofy comedies, he tried serious and mainstream movies but then again, he is back to comedies and currently aiming for thriller.
Efron’s father, David Efron, was an electrical engineer, and his mother, Starla Baskett, was a secretary. His childhood, as he described, was a normal one in a middle-class family. When Zac was 11 years old, his father encouraged him to begin acting. Zac started to take part in many theater productions in his high school, worked in the theater The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville. He also began to take singing lessons and was later signed to the Creative Artists Agency. In 2006, Efron graduated from Arroyo Grande High School and was accepted into University of Southern California, however, he chose to focus on film projects instead. He also enrolled in a community college in Santa Maria, Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts, to gain the opportunity to perform during 2000 and 2001.
