In the early 1990s, following the death of his brother Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, Uthradom Varma assumed the title of Maharaja of Travancore.
He was a recipient of the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal; the King George VI Coronation Medal; and the Indian Independence Medal.
Born a century apart, he and Rani Lakshmibai were both members of Indian royalty.
