After working in the oil fields and played defensive end in the United States Football League's Okalahoma Outlaws, Keith decided to focus on the music career with a self-titled album "Should've been a cowboy" certified planium in 1993. After finishing work, he would be allowed to join the house band on the stage, where he discovered his aptitude for music. Toby received his first guitar when he was eight and then played defensive end on the high school football team. Instea of going on to college, Keith worked as a derrick hand in Oklahoman oil fields with his father before forming a band named "Easy Money" which played at local bars after work.
Toby Keith met his wife Tricia Lucus in 1979 at a club where his band was peforming and 5 years later, in 1984, Keith married Lucus having three children - two daughters named Shelley Covel Rowland (1980, be adopted in 1984), Krystal LaDawn Covel Sandubrae (1985), and one son named Stelen Keith Covel (1987).
