Deployed as a midfieder, Bentaleb plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and the Algeria national football team. On 22 December 2013, he made his professional debut for Spurs in a 3-2 win against Southampton in the Premier League. Bentaleb scored his first goal for the club on 17 December 2014 in the fifth round of the Football League Cup against Newcastle United. On 6 July 2015, he signed a new five-year contract with Spurs. The midfieder debuted for the Algeria national team in March 2014 and has represented the country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Bentaleb has also earned 16 international caps and scored 2 goals as of April 2015.
Bentaleb spent his early soccer career at Lille football academy but was released aged 15 and then went to Belgium playing for Mouscron. He continued trying to play for Birmingham City before finally entering Tottenham Hotspur academy in January 2012.
Bentaleb was born and brought up by Algerian parents in Lille, France.
