Kō Shibasaki, born Yukie Yamamura, is a Japanese actress and singer. Her stage name originated from the main character of Junko Kawakami's manga Golden Delicious Apple Sherbet. She rose to fame when portraying Mitsuko Souma in the cult classic Battle Royale (2000). In the next year, through her role as Tsubaki Sakurai in the film Go, she earned various awards such as the Best Supporting Actress Award of Japanese Academy, the Hōchi Movie Award and the Kinema Junpō Award. In addition to acting career, she made her debut in the music industry in 2002 and had an impressing single Tsuki no shizuku, used for the movie Yomigaeri, becoming one of the best J-pop hits of 2003.
She began acting career since the age of 14 and appeared in a number of TV shows and commercials before gaining fame as today.
