Lee Ji-eun, commonly known by her stage name IU, is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actress. Her first album Growing Up released in 2009 launched her to prominence. In 2012, she became more famous by her starring role in the musical drama Dream High. Throughout career, she has won 64 music and film awards, 32 music program awards.
IU has a younger brother. At the age of 14, she decided to become a singer after singing at her school’s sport competition. In 2008, she appeared on Mnet M! Countdown with her debut single Lost Child, which was later released as the title track for her debut mini-album Lost and Found.
Her stage name is derived from the phrase "I and You", symbolizing that people can become one through music. Her fan club name is Uaena, where each syllable has a different meaning: "U" is "You" in English, "ae" is Sino-Korean for "love", and "na" is "me" in Korean.
