Lithuanian politician who became Lithuania's first female head of state when she was elected to the presidency in 2009. She had previously served as the European Commissioner for Education and Culture.
She is often referred to as the Iron Lady or the Steel Magnolia and she has mentioned Margaret Thatcher, who was also referred to as the Iron Lady, as her political role model.
She and Valdas Adamkus both served as President of Lithuania.
Before her presidency she was Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance.
She has never married and has no children.
